Moraga Steps Quilt Pattern Launch

Inspired by the Moraga Steps, located in the Sunset District of San Francisco.

Located in the heart of the Sunset District, the Moraga Steps are hidden in a residential neighborhood and climb up to Grand View Park. From the top, you can get amazing views of the city. These steps have been the backdrop for my family’s photos for both of my kids’ first birthdays, so they hold a special place in my heart - and on the walls of my home! I love the detail of the mosaic and the rich tones of blue featured in the steps. This quilt is inspired by the swirl texture in the mosaic and the endless rows of steps.

Simple. Striking. Modern.

This pattern has two variations: Standard and Gradient and comes in three sizes:

  • Baby (49” x 54”)

  • Throw (65” x 72”)

  • Bed (89” x 108”)

The pattern is rated at an Advanced Beginner level and is traditionally pieced. The complexities in the pattern are within the small block construction and within the strip piecing. The pattern also teaches how to make Half Square Triangles using two methods - perfect for skill building!

Finished items may be produced for sale with proper attribution for the design to Sarah Jean Makes.

Pattern Tester Versions and Variations

Jeanne @jeanne.garcia Standard 1.JPG

Jeanne (IG: @jeanne.garcia) created a phenomenal Standard Variation Throw sized quilt. She used Ruby Star Society fabrics and they really popped in the pattern. If you look closely, you can see the Manatee fabric in the Swirls - such a playful little addition to this gorgeous quilt!

This playful and bright Throw size in the Standard Variation was beautifully created by Kaitlin (IG: @quarterlifeleap). These geometric rainbow prints bring such vibrancy and energy to the pattern and really shows how it can transform depending on fabric choice!

Ursula (IG: @modern_rural_quilter) created a Standard Variation Baby sized quilt and used a large print as her Background fabric. This choice gave such a beautiful pop of color and texture on this quilt! Hank, the horse, agrees.

Michelle (IG: @oh_sew_penny) created this Throw sized, Gradient Variation using Alison Glass Art Theory fabrics. The gradient is a perfect rainbow and brings such joy and vibrancy to the pattern. It’s almost as if the Background fabric is iridescent!

This fresh and cute Baby size in the Standard Variation was made by Courtney (IG: @Sewing_Scientist). She showcased such beautiful textures in her fabric selections and paired so sweetly with a cheerful lemon print for the backing. Her quilt feels like a cool glass of raspberry lemonade on a warm spring day!

Emily (IG: @harkincquilting) created a Throw size top in the Standard Variation and utilized stunning blues for her Accent and Background fabrics. She added a sharp contrast with a deep blue/black fabric for her Swirl. Her version is so impressive and really demonstrates how clean and modern this pattern can be.

Angela (IG: @nowsewwhat) made a gorgeous Bed sized Standard quilt. Her use of big bold fabric for the Accent line was showcased so well in her version and brings such a sense of wonder and whimsy. And who can resist a quilt cape?! She brings full forest queen vibes here!

Vicky @quilterful_creations Gradient 2.jpg

Vicky (IG: @Quilterful_Creations) created a baby size quilt in the Gradient Variation and chose such a crisp and fresh color palette. She gave a touch of texture with her Swirl fabrics and really allowed the color to pop against the solid background. It’s elegant and playful all at once!

Kathlynn (IG: @KMNQuiltCo) made a Bed sized quilt in the Standard Variation. Her version is so clean, crisp, and holds a touch of romance with the gorgeous floral print in the Swirl. It would be the perfect addition to any chic living space.

Alison (IG: @alriver809) used a romantic and dreamy floral for her Accent fabric, which added a touch of softness against the bold and beautiful Swirl color. She created a Bed sized quilt and showcased how simple and striking this pattern can be.

Karli @karliskreationsco Standard 1.jpeg

This painterly version was created by Karli (IG: @KarlisKreationsCo). She made a Throw sized quilt top in the Standard Variation. She beautifully captured a serene feeling with her fabric choices - almost as if you are in a Monet painting!

Once again, I am so completely impressed and in awe of the beautiful pieces that the testers created. I loved to see their personal style and preference come through in the quilt. Some playful and bright, others soft and neutral - it is so refreshing to see how this quilt can change and morph based on each person’s individual aesthetic. I am so grateful for their vision and support in helping bring this pattern to life. Thank you to all of the glorious people who supported this launch. I am so humbled.

If you’ve made it this far - thank you. I cannot wait to see how YOU interpret this pattern and create something magical.
